The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro new camera capabilities include Action mode, which is pretty self-explanatory. It’s an option in video mode that turbocharges stabilization for extreme motion, like the following someone while they work out so you can capture it, or chasing your kid around the playground, which is its own form of exercise. In spite of its seeming simplicity, there are a few things you should be aware of to make the most of its features.
The instructions below are for an iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 16.0, but they should work just as well with a regular iPhone 14.
Action Mode: Getting Started
The transition into Action mode is painless:
Launch your device’s built-in camera program.
You should probably go into video mode.
The emblem of a runner should be tapped in the upper left corner of the screen.
As of right now, you’re in “Action” mode and able to take immediate, decisive action. The camera will automatically use the ultrawide lens (the 0.5x icon at the bottom of the screen will be highlighted), but you can switch lenses by tapping the other selections. The symbol in the top right corner of the display can be used to switch between HD (1080p) and UHD (2.8K) display modes.
The indoor version of the Action mode needs optimization.
If you’re using the gadget indoors, “more light required” may show. Ideally, you should utilize action mode outside, where there’s lots of light, but that doesn’t mean you can’t. Even if the low light warning shows, you can still record and shoot in Action mode, albeit the results will be very blurry. In less than ideal illumination, though, Action mode can be used to great effect.
Tap Camera > Record Video in the Settings menu.
Set “Action Mode Lower Light”
This will result in somewhat less stability, but better video quality in low-light interior settings. It’s useful, but don’t expect miracles from it. You’ll notice a change in a well-lit room, and the low-light warning won’t appear unless the brightness is very low; but, the alert will still appear in really dark environments. Under those situations, the default video mode and stabilization settings are fine.
The Action mode is another option for capturing high levels of activity, especially in natural settings.

The new iPhone 14 Pro introduces more potential game-changing features than any iPhone has before. These features include Apple’s latest A16 Bionic silicon, the dynamic island, and an always-on display. Even when we’re seeing something new on the iPhone for the first time, that doesn’t mean everything is great.
